Most GVN Volunteers are currently taken up in our teaching programs. This means that our volunteers will be working as a teacher at one of the many secondary schools in the Kathmandu Valley. Each placement lasts from a minimum of three months to a maximum of 5 months, depending on personal requirements by the volunteer and requirements by the schools in Nepal. Prior to the placement, every volunteer will be subject to a compulsory training and orientation course which lasts two to three weeks.

The disciplines our volunteers are teaching vary from subjects as English, geography and social studies to biology, history, mathematics and so on. You are further required to actively participate in various culture, sports, music, play and dance events or programs.

During your placement you will be provided with accommodation and food by the school. Your spare time during working weeks can be spent freely to your choice, but generally our volunteers tend to focus a lot of attention on integrating into the local communities. The quality of both the lodging and nourishments is rather mediocre (compared to Western standards) and typical Nepali. If required, GVN can provide all kinds of excursions and tours that will meet to your liking.

Below you will find further information on our programs and the unique contribution that you will be making to Nepal. Also, details can be found on health, insurance and visa requirements. For full details and background on the characteristics of teaching and living in Nepal we kindly refer to the Teaching in Nepal and Living in Nepal pages.

Your Contribution
A unique issue of our programs is that part of the volunteers fee (see section Program Details below) will flow back into the community where the volunteer is placed. This financial contribution can then be used by the school to - to name a few - obtain school materials, provide hygienic services (e.g. toilets, showers, etc.) or even realizing health services that are currently unavailable (e.g. running water, medications, etc.).

In addition to their work inside the school, the volunteers also run a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. Transforming a group of motivated local youths into a team of active educators, the volunteers mobilize the community to profile their own village and, where possible, respond to their prioritized needs with practical, low cost, grassroots action.

In this way, both the volunteers and the participating schools experience that the contribution made to Nepals socio-economic development is a truly substantial one. One that indeed makes a difference!
Orientation Course
Prior to the teaching placement, our volunteers will undergo an introductory orientation course on Nepali customs and habits. This course is compulsory to all volunteers and comprises of classes covering Nepali language, culture, formal and non-formal teaching techniques, appropriate rural technologies, seminars, development awareness, and issues especially relevant to Nepal. The orientation program also includes several sightseeing trips within Kathmandu Valley and a trekking (7-10 days!) in the Annapurna region. The costs of the orientation course, are included in the fee.
Program Details
Below you can find a summary of all the program details.

Locations: All over Kathmandu Valley and close to the communities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur.

Schools: Elementary primary & secondary schools. The schools are either privately or governmental owned.

School Lodgings & Food: During your school placement, you will be living in the school hostels with the boarders (if such a facility is available) or with the principal or vice-principal. Wherever the volunteers stay, all of the food will be provided by the school.

Holidays: In school holiday times, the volunteers are free to do as they wish. They can stay in the hostel, although they may feel lonely if the children and staff go home. Alternatively, they can easily find some cheap accommodation in Thamel, the tourist part of Katmandu.

Travels: Finally, many volunteers choose to travel during school holidays. It is relatively easy to visit other parts of Nepal as well as India, Bhutan, Sikkim and Tibet.

Dates: The indicative starting dates for the 2003 programs are:
- Early January 2003
- Early March 2003
- Early September 2003
- Early November 2003
Exact dates will be communicated to you upon your shown interest as starting dates might have to be altered because of school preferences.

Flight: You will need to book your own flight and make sure that you will arrive prior to the starting date of the program. Of course we will assist and provide guidance to you in order to obtain the right tickets.

Arrival in Kathmandu: Upon arrival in Kathmandu, a Global Vision Nepal representative will await you and provide you with the proper Nepali reception.
Costs & Fee
The total fee for running the entire Global Vision Nepal program is USD/Euro 1,500.-. This fee covers the orientation course, the sightseeing trips, trekking, jungle safari, rafting. It goes without saying that the cost of lodgings and food during the entire introduction and orientation period and your school placement is covered by us. Part of the costs will flow back into the community where the volunteer is placed (see section Your Contribution above). We advise you to bring around USD/Euro 1,000.- of pocket money for a period of 3 months.
Health & Insurance
As diarrhea will be the main problem, the volunteers should remember to take plenty of Imodium and dioralyte! Katmandu has a hospital and numerous (international) doctors. Besides that there is a Western clinic where all the Western medicines and vaccinations are available. Please bear in mind that the organization is not responsible for the payment of medical fees. We therefore advise to take out an adequate insurance policy, in case serious circumstances should arise.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Volunteers should apply for a 1-month tourist visa in person at the local Royal Nepal Embassy or Consulate or through the Royal Nepalese Consulate General office or upon arrival at Katmandu Airport (remember to bring four passport sized photographs in your hand luggage). Remember that you will personally be required to extend your visa for their second and third month in Kathmandu. Visa with a validity over 1-month are not available for volunteer workers.

Entry to Nepal may be refused, and airlines may not carry passengers holding passports with less than six months validity. Overstaying without authority is serious and visitors can be detained or refused permission to leave until a fine is paid. For further information visitors should check with your local Royal Nepalese Embassy or Consulate.
